Traditional rulers in Imo state, from Owerri zones, on Thursday, held a peace rally against the insecurity ravaging the state for the past eight months.
They poured libation for peace and progress of the state and the nation at major junctions of Owerri zone and invoked the gods of the land to deal with troublemakers.
The Vice Chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers and the monarch of Awaka community in Owerri North Council Area, Eze Akujobi Osuagwa, said as the custodians of the culture and tradition of the people, it is incumbent on them to ensure that there is peace.
He said: “If there is no peace, there will not be progress in the state and the country.
“Today the Ezes in Owerri zone came out for a peace rally and we moved round major junctions in Owerri zone to pour libation for peace. We started at the Okpala junction at Ngor Okpala and moved to Ahiara junction in Ahiazu Mbaise, to Amanwaozozu in Ikeduru and lastly to the Government House junction on Okigwe road in Owerri Municipal Council.”
Osuagwa added: “We defied the rains to do this because we want peace in the state, without which there will not be progress. We as monarchs will always support the government in power, regardless of how the person emerged. We advise the citizens to do same because power comes from God. In all the places we visited, the people were happy to receive us, because they are tired of the daily killings.
“Governor Hope Uzodimma is doing his best. He needs to be supported for the state to move forward.”
The traditional ruler of Ngurunwekeoha community in Aboh Mbaise, Eze John David Nwaaturuocha Oha, said what the Owerri zonal monarchs had done was to ensure peace and progress.
“What we have done today is for peace and progress of the state. We are not in support of the bloodshed being witnessed in the state. The Ezes moved out for a peace rally and as you could see, the young and the old came out to join in this movement for peace.
“We have come to bless our land. We are not happy over the recent happenings because it is not in our character to be violent. We are known for peace. Our governor is a good man and the people of Mbaise are with him. We appeal to our youths to stop destruction and killings”.
Eze Pius Onyekwere of Nnarambia in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government said God has bestowed power on Governor Uzodimma, therefore he cannot be questioned.
“We as owners of the land, we are also the voice of our people. We are calling for peace. We have decreed that peace has returned and it has indeed returned to the state. We must, as citizens of Imo State, support our governor for the progress of the state. We are for any government in power and not politicians,” he said.
