IMF Urges Nigerian Government to Protect Vulnerable Citizens Amid Petrol Price Hike

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has advised the Nigerian government to prioritize building and accelerating a social safety net to protect vulnerable citizens from the impact of the recent petrol price hike. In an interview with Arise TV, IMF Resident Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Christian Ebeke, expressed concern that Nigerians are facing significant hardship due to multiple shocks, including high inflation and food inflation.

While acknowledging that petrol prices are still below market price, Ebeke emphasized the need for a clear mechanism to cushion the impact of price adjustments on the most vulnerable. He also stressed the importance of ensuring supply stability and competition in the market, highlighting the need for a well-coordinated adjustment program to address the country’s economic challenges.

Ebeke’s comments come as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has also hinted at a possible further upward price movement. The IMF executive’s statement has sparked reactions from experts, with some agreeing that social safety nets are crucial to mitigate the effects of economic reforms on the poor.

Clifford Egbomeade, a Public Analyst and Communications Expert, noted that while the IMF’s call for market-reflective prices aligns with economic sustainability, it is essential to recognize the heavy reliance of many Nigerians on petrol for transportation, small-scale businesses, and power generation. He emphasized the need for adequate cushioning mechanisms to prevent worsening economic hardship.

Tajudeen Olayinka, an Investment Banker and Stockbroker concurred with the IMF’s advice but highlighted the failure of policies as the major challenge facing the economy. He stressed the need for a well-coordinated adjustment program to address the country’s economic challenges.

The Nigerian government has announced plans to reach out to 15 million households through its social safety net program, but critics argue that more needs to be done to address the country’s economic challenges. As the country grapples with the impact of the petrol price hike, the IMF’s advice serves as a reminder of the need for a comprehensive approach to mitigate the effects of economic reforms on the most vulnerable citizens.
