Ike Ekweremadu’s efforts for his people vanished while he was imprisoned in the United Kingdom – Senator Anyim Pius Anyim (GCON)
According to Sen. Anyim when I returned to the village with my family for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Normally, this yuletide season allows us to meet some of our loved ones in the village and share local experiences. When I return to the area during this season, I usually park my tiny car and either walk or ride my motorbike. Only on that note will you feel the full impact of the holiday. You must find a reason to thank God for your current situation.
I used my younger brother’s motorbike to travel the length and breadth of the Ishiagu kingdom. From Amachara Ngwogwo to quarry Amonye, down to Amata railway line, through Ameze railway farm, up to Ndiagbor/Ameke boundary, en route to Ibii Okue, by Ovumte Amagu, and I wanted to go to Okovia Ogwor, but I had to respect our dear Governor Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s executive order, which declared the crisis-ridden Okovia Ogwor a buffer zone.
I returned to Ngwogwo and travelled to Mpu, where I consumed bush meat and palm wine. I was talking with my friend from Mpu when he started telling me stories that gave me shivers all over my body. He began by advising me to constantly appreciate what I have since no man will come to develop my place better than me.
He began telling me how many of them were against Senator Ike Ekweremadu, the former Deputy Senate President. He claimed that if there are 100 wealthy people in Mpu now, they have all reaped the benefits of Ekweremadu’s generosity. Ekweremadu was responsible for all of their roads, healthcare facilities, schools, and other infrastructure.
Even the electricity they were using in Mpu disappeared when Ekweremadu was imprisoned in the United Kingdom. He went on to remark that if Ekweremadu were to visit Ndi Mpu over the Christmas season, everyone would feel it when they went inside his compound to pick up one or more Christmas gifts. He stated a lot of things, but he ended by thanking God that he is still alive and in prison. He stated that whatever day he gets liberated, there will be unimaginable celebrations in Aninri LGA. We learnt our lesson the hard way; he added.
At that point, I felt terrible for him and began to console him. I informed him that we all make the same mistakes, but our capacity to recognise ourselves on time is important. I informed him that the forebearer of the Ishiagu kingdom is Dist. Senator Anyim Pius Anyim (GCON). He saw the possibility of becoming a senator when no one in the Ishiagu kingdom believed that an Ishiagu man could possibly succeed in such an endeavour. I believe that the highest dream an Ishiagu man may have is to become a Local Government Chairman. Anyim ran in the election against Odefa (father of Ali and Obasi Odefa). Almost all of the stakeholders supported Odefa, but God stood by him and granted him victory.
He understands that his position is precarious, so he prioritises human capital investment. He placed numerous men and women from the Ishiagu kingdom in various positions of leadership and pushed our people to attend school through his scholarship foundation. He believes that by raising men and women of high renown, he will be able to establish the Ishiagu empire of his dreams.
The journey of raising men and women has unique problems, as many individuals will not thank you in the end. They will constantly see what you haven’t done while ignoring what you have done. You simply need to have the mindset of dismissing all distractions and moving on. It is a difficult decision, but you don’t have a choice.
As of present, I feel Ishiagu Kingdom is the most developed town in Ebonyi South. The locals’ living standards are rather encouraging, and the infrastructure rebirth is nothing short of spectacular. Except for electricity, nothing is lacking in Ishiagu. The grade of dwellings being erected throughout the Ishiagu kingdom is excellent. The road network is appealing, and the system is 70 percent functional. The only issue we are now facing is insecurity, which is a widespread problem.
All of the rich men in the Ishiagu kingdom now owe something to Anyim Pius. However, they will never tell you; instead, they will tell you what the man has not done or how their overambition forced them to fall out with the man. But I admire Anyim’s character. He is unconcerned about your view of him. It would not be inaccurate to argue that Anyim is the predecessor of the Ishiagu empire. Let me stop here and return to Ishiagu. It is almost 9:40 p.m., and darkness has fallen everywhere. My motorbike does not have good lighting, but I will manage.
