IGBO CULTURE AND SOCIETY: The Practice of Igbo Polygamy and how it Compares to Western Monogamy
Igbo polygamy is a practice that has been a part of the Igbo culture for centuries. It involves a man having multiple wives and is seen as a status symbol in the community. While Western society (especially religious persons) frown upon this practice, it is important to note that it has its advantages.
One of the advantages of Igbo polygamy is that it allows for the sharing of resources. In a traditional Igbo household, the wives work together to ensure that the household is taken care of. This includes cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children. With multiple wives, the workload is significantly reduced, leaving more time for leisure activities and personal pursuits.
Another advantage of Igbo polygamy is the sense of community it creates. In a polygamous household, the wives and their children work together as a team. This creates a sense of belonging and camaraderie that is not present in monogamous households. The children grow up knowing that they have a large extended family that will support them throughout their lives.
Polygamy also provides financial stability. In a polygamous household, the wives are able to contribute to the family income. This allows the family to live a more comfortable life and provides a safety net for unexpected expenses. Additionally, the man is able to marry multiple wives without the fear of being financially burdened by the additional responsibilities.
While Western monogamy is seen as the norm, it has its drawbacks. One of the biggest drawbacks is the pressure it places on the couple to be everything to each other. In monogamous relationships, there is an expectation that the partner will fulfil all of one’s emotional and physical needs. This can often lead to disappointment and dissatisfaction.
Monogamy can also lead to a lack of a support system. In a monogamous household, the couple is expected to be self-sufficient and do everything on their own. This can be isolating and lead to feelings of loneliness.
In conclusion, while Igbo polygamy may not be for everyone. Igbo polygamy provides many advantages, including the sharing of resources, a sense of community and financial stability. It is a practice that has been a part of Igbo culture for centuries and should be respected.
