Obinwannem News House of Reps issue a 3-day ultimatum to CBN, IGP, over looted funds

Ad-hoc committee of the House of Representatives, investigating recovered assets, has given the Central Bank Governor Godwin Emeifele, Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali, 72 hours to appear before it.

The committee also issued same ultimatum to Babagana Monguno, and the Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Bashir Jamoh.

The summon was issued on Monday after Emeifele and others failed to honour subsequent summons by the committee.

Nevertheless, the government officials had sent representatives, but the committee chairman, Adejoro Adeogun, (APC, Ondo) said they failed to forward letters to that effect.

He said allowing representatives without a proper letter of introduction, would be akin to condoning “impersonators”.

Adejoro said in anmoyance; “you are undermining the House of Representatives”.

Following the deadline given to the government officials, Ibrahim Isiaka, (APC, Ogun), said agencies created by Acts of the parliament “should not be undermining the parliament”.

The motion was unanimously adopted by the committee.

Mr Ishaka, suggested that the House should use legislative powers to shut down its activities, if the agencies fail to appear before them.

Mr Adeogun said, “This committee has passed a motion. Now, the governor of CBN, the IGP, the National Security Adviser, and the Director General of NIMASA, have between now and Thursday to appear before this committee; otherwise the parliament – the House of Representatives – will invoke its power to deal with them according to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

In line with the constitution; section 89, subsection 1d, and 2 of the 1999 Constitution, enables the committee of the National Assembly powers to summon anyone in the course of an investigation. Also the section gives lawmakers powers to issue an arrest warrant.
