Obinwannem News Gunmen attack INEC office, police station in Anambra, raze buildings

ANAMBRA – Government institutions were raided by unknown thugs Sunday night; Awka Police Divisional Station, AND an5 Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office were set ablaze.

According to an eyewitness,, the gunmen arrived in three black Hilux vans, began shooting the air; all the way from first market in Ifite, Awka, thereby igniting tension in the entire area.

It was said residents scampered for safety, while night traders immediately packed their goods.

Reports made available to Obinwannem Media revealed that “the hoodlums did not only attack the Police Division, which is directly adjacent to the Anambra State secretariat, but also continued the attack from Alex Ekwueme Square, down to the INEC office; just a stone throw away from the station”.

Another source who confirmed the incident said before the gunmen proceeded to INEC, they drove to Aroma junction, shooting sporadically, for about 10 minutes, before heading to the INEC office. The number of casualties has yet to be known. It added that there was likelihood of collosal damage, at both institutions with possible death.

“I saw flames of fire going up, from the police station, and INEC offices, but I cannot say whether people were killed or not, because I did not go closer,” the source said.

The INEC Resident Commissioner in Anambra, Dr Nwachukwu Orji, said he had recieved information on the attack in his office, but he could not comment officially on the matter.

“I need to get a clear picture of what happened in my office, before i can speak,” he said.

Meanwhile, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) said he was still making contacts to get the accurate information of happenings surrounding the attacks on the two federal institutions of the State.
