A former senator from Akwa Ibom, Etang Umoyo, has been reported dead.

Mr Umoyo did represent Akwa Ibom South senatorial district during the ‘aborted’ third republic. He died on Saturday at his residence in Uyo, aged 71.

A statement released by his son, Ime Umoyo revealed that the former lawmaker was ill prior to his demise.

Mr Umoyo was a foundation member of the People’s Democratic party (PDP), before he defected to the All progressive Congress (APC) in 2017 in Etebi ward 7, Esit Ekit local government area, Akwa ibom state.

He left PDP because according to him “a group of mafians,” had taken over PDP in Akwa Ibom State, during the 2014 PDP governorship primaries in the State.

Mr Umoyo later returned to PDP in 2018, claiming he was doing so in order to help governor Udom Emmanuel win a second term.

He said he did not approve of the process that led to his victory as a governor, but due to the respect, and regard he (Emmanuel) deserved his support.

Regarding the funeral arrangement of the deceased Senator, the family has yet to disclose when he shall be buried.
