Obinwannem News Food Blockade: Northern traders lament decay of onions, other food stuffs, urge govt to intervene

Northern traders were plunged to grief, following the suspension of Onion supply to the South. It was said their farm produce (onions) had begun decaying .

Recall, the Onion Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, (OPMAN), had announced a decision to suspend the supply of the products to the Southeast over high level of insecurity in the region.

Sequel to the suspension, stakeholders in the agricultural sector urged the federal government to intervene in the crisis, to ensure that normalcy returns.

According to reports heaps of onion were said to have rotten, since the suspension of the supply of the product to the South.

“If government fails to adhere to the demands of the association, we are shutting down the supply of Onions to the entire South by Monday, June 7, 2021,” he had announced.

The OPMAN president Mr Aliyu Umar, while making the announcement claimed two truck loads of the produce were recently hijacked by unknown thugs, in its transition to the South.

Mr Aliyu, however, accused members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB for being responsible.
