In 1963, Sanusi’s grandfather, Sir Muhammadu Sanusi I, was dethroned as the Emir of Kano, due to an alleged power tussle between him and the then Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello.

Reports say that after his dethronement 57 years ago, the late Sanusi I opted to go to exile in Azare, a city in Bauchi State.

Fast forward to 2020, the Governor Abdullahi Ganduje-led government of Kano State has on Monday, dethroned the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from 2009 to 2014.

According to reports, Sir Ahmadu Bello was said to have set up a probe panel that recommended Sanusi senior’s dethronement to Sir Kashim Ibrahim, the then governor of Northern Region.

Some sources say Sanusi has been accused of speaking against northern leaders for their conservative Islamic values.
