FG Unveils Modest Plans for Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day Celebration

The Federal Government has officially announced the schedule for Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebration. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, disclosed the details on Thursday, outlining a series of events to mark the occasion.

According to Naija News, the celebration will commence with a World Press Conference on Thursday, September 26, 2024. Akume revealed these plans during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee tasked with overseeing the Independence Day festivities.

Nigeria, which gained independence from British colonial rule in 1960, will commemorate its 64th anniversary on October 1, 2024. The committee, inaugurated by Hadiza Usman, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, on behalf of the SGF, will manage and execute all approved activities for the event.

In a statement issued by Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information in the Office of the SGF, it was emphasized that the anniversary will be observed in a subdued manner due to the economic challenges currently facing the nation. Akume, who chairs the committee, stressed that the celebration will focus on highlighting the government’s reform efforts aimed at repositioning the country and delivering democratic dividends.

The scheduled activities include a Juma’at service on Friday, September 27, 2024, a church service on Sunday, September 29, 2024, and a Presidential Broadcast and Independence Day parade on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

The committee consists of several key government officials, including ministers from various departments, the National Security Adviser, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Inspector-General of Police. Their mandate includes planning and documenting all activities for the celebration.

The Federal Government has made it clear that this year’s Independence Day will reflect the somber times, focusing on achievements and reforms during the administration’s tenure.
