The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice at a heavily subsidized rate of N40,000 per 50kg bag, but there’s a catch—only citizens with a National Identification Number (NIN) will qualify. During the flag-off ceremony, President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, emphasized that each buyer is entitled to just one bag of rice, ensuring fair distribution.

The process is meticulously planned: once a buyer’s NIN is logged into the system, a code and treasury receipt are generated. This allows the buyer to collect their bag of rice at a designated centre, with the time and point of collection clearly stated to avoid crowding. The government’s new system aims to eliminate any chance of a stampede or mismanagement.

Earlier, in July, the Minister of Information, Idris Mohammed, had announced the sale of subsidized rice, but the plan was suspended without explanation. Now, with this bold move, the government is back on track, ensuring Nigerians can access affordable rice while controlling the flow and preventing black-market resales.

The rice intervention program is poised to impact the economy and the everyday lives of Nigerians, offering relief at a time when food prices are skyrocketing.
