Obinwannem News FG okays NYSC reforms, ignores scraping the 48-years old scheme

The Nigerian government has taken steps to reforming the long-existing National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, despite moves by the House of Representatives to scrap the scheme.

The Minster of Youths and Sports, Sunday Dare made this known on Wednesday. He said NYSC scheme remained one of the greatest tools for National development for youth.

The Minister made the statement, following a bill to have the 48 years old NYSC scraped; created by the former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, debated by the House of Representatives.

The bill to scrap NYSC, reached the second reading on Monday, at the House of Representatives.

The bill was sponsored by the lawmaker representing Andone-Opobo/Nkoro federal constituency of Rivers State. The Memorandum of the proposed bill listed various reasons why the NYSC should be discontinued.

One of which was the insecurity challenges that has lead to the incessant killing of innocent corps members in some parts of the country, due to “banditry, religious extremism, and ethnic violence, incessant kidnapping of innocent Corps members across the country”.

Despite the security concerns raised as one major reasons to scrap the scheme, the Youth Minister, who spearhead the NYSC, said the scheme would remain.

Dare in a tweet said, “The commitment of government to sustaining the NYSC scheme remains,” noting that the “dynamic reforms and initiatives towards current realities are ongoing”.

Meanwhile, details of structure of the reforms, are yet to be known, some tertiary institution graduates, observing the scheme have been victims of abduction, killing and attack on the Northeast region of Nigeria.

In January 2021, the NYSC exempted Corps members posted to Borno State, from the annual camping exercise.

Although, the NYSC did not state any reason for the exemption of Corps members posted to the Northeast State, but events in the Northeast suggest that it could be for security reasons.

Regardless of these security challenges, Dare affirms, “Nigeria will stand with the Youths”.
