Empowerment” Program Under Fire: Wife of Nigerian Lawmaker Distributes Sugarcane Sticks to Youths
A photo of Hajiya Fatima Aminu Aliyu Garu, wife of Nigerian House of Representatives member Garu Aminu Aliyu, went viral after distributing sugarcane sticks to youths in Bauchi State. The program was labelled an “empowerment” initiative, but critics call it another example of ridiculous donations made by politicians or their aides and spouses in Nigeria.
This incident is not an isolated one, as there have been several instances of public officials distributing items like tricycles, motorcycles, grinding machines, water sachets, and shoe-shining kits to constituents. In some cases, donkeys, cassava stems, and even goats have been given out under the guise of economic empowerment.
The practice has been widely criticized for being ineffective and insulting, highlighting the lack of meaningful support for constituents from their elected representatives. Many argue that these donations do not address the underlying issues of poverty and unemployment, but rather serve as a publicity stunt to boost the politician’s image.
The sugarcane stick distribution has sparked outrage on social media, with many calling for more substantial initiatives to support the youth. The incident has also raised questions about the qualifications and capabilities of those in leadership positions.
As of press time, there has been no response from the lawmaker’s office regarding the distribution. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for effective and sustainable solutions to address Nigerian youths’ challenges.
