Mbah encourages party members to prioritize excellent governance.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, South East, has chosen a new zonal executive to oversee the party’s business in the zone, with Chief Ali Odefa returning as Zonal Chairman.

Hon. James Ugwu was elected as the Zonal Secretary, Mrs. Regina Uchebo as the Zonal Treasurer, and Hon. Cornelius Okey Ugwu as the Zonal Zonal Organising Secretary during the party’s zonal congress held on Wednesday in Enugu’s Michael Okpara Square. Madubuike Okoro, Engr. Chigozie Igwe, Barr. Dominic Nwankwo, and Mrs. Ifeyinwa Arodiogbo were elected to the zone’s positions of Financial Secretary, Publicity Secretary, Legal Adviser, and Woman Leader, respectively.

Similarly, Ezeanya Augustine and Godswill Nwanoruo were chosen to serve as Auditor and Zonal Youth Leader, respectively. Five Zonal Ex-Officio and six Zonal Ex-Officio were also elected. Party supporters were warned earlier by Dr. Peter Mbah, the governor of Enugu State and the party’s leader in the South East zone, that “election is never an end in itself and neither should the victory arising from it be construed as personal triumphs.”

With the insistence that “democracy abhors excuses – no matter how plausible they sound,” the governor charged party loyalists with using the PDP as a model for effective government.

“We are completely aware of the expectations and needs of the populace in a democracy. It all comes down to effective governance. The PDP has been dedicated to this concept since its founding. For this reason, the people of Enugu State continue to be at the core of governmental policy. We do not take the task of improving their welfare lightly.

It is evident in our will to make sure that people may truly take the provision of essential services for granted. “Democracy transcends the struggle for position and authority. The individuals are the focus. That cannot be emphasized enough,” Mbah said. In order to bring the party back to its former glory in the South East, he also gave party members the duty of uniting and reimagining it.

The party’s ability to reinvent itself and maintain its national appeal in the face of difficulties is what makes it so great. The PDP has long been a stronghold in the South East. We have to make sure it stays that way.

The Zonal Chairman, Chief Odefa, called for unity in his acceptance speech on behalf of the 21-member Zonal Executive, claiming that it is the only way to ensure the PDP’s victory over the ruling All Progressive’s Congress, or APC, which it accused of having poor policies and poor governance that have caused suffering throughout the country.

The Deputy Governor of Enugu State was present. Barr Ifeanyi Ossai; Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly; Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees; Senators Osita Ngwu, Augustine Akobundu, and Nnoli Nnaji, Senate Minority Whip.

Senator Sam Egwu, Chief Dan Orbih, the party’s national auditor, Council Chairmen Hon. Okechukwu Edeh, federal and state legislators, state party executives, and other zone representatives are among the others.
