Colombia football coach arrested on an assault charge

Ramón Jesurún, the chairman of the Colombian Football Federation, and his son were arrested after a confrontation during Sunday’s Copa América final in Miami. Mr Ramón, 71, and Ramón Jamil, 43, were arrested on counts of violence against an official or employee, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

The allegations stem from a scuffle at the stadium following Colombia’s 0-1 loss to Argentina in extra time. Neither Mr Ramón nor his son have made any public comments about the situation. The Miami-Dade Police Department claimed in a statement to the BBC that the event occurred shortly after the football match ended at the Hard Rock Stadium in the south-east US state.

Mr Ramón and his son were “walking towards the entrance of the field”, it claimed, but they grew “irate and began shouting” at one of the security officials, who was told by his management to temporarily stop people from going further. The police stated that the officer “placed an open palm” on Mr Ramón’s son’s chest to guide him back.

Mr Ramón then assaulted the officer, according to reports, while his son seized his neck and dragged him to the ground, hitting and kicking him in the head. According to authorities, Mr Ramón’s son grabbed and pushed a female official who attempted to assist.
