Obinwannem News Cattle dealers embark on strike, give cause of food restriction from North to South

The Amalgamated Union of Food stuffs and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria (AUFCDN) has explained why its members decided to cease the movement of food items from North to South.

The group began an indefinite strike, faulting the government’s inability to resolve the incessant killing of its members in parts of the country .

According to news obtained by Obinwannem, the union is also stopping its members from moving cattle and foodstuffs to the southern part of Nigeria.

This was confirmed by the financial secretary of the AUFCDN, Kabiru Saisu. He said a task force set up by the union was enforcing the strike in Niger state and other areas.

On Thursday, trucks conveying agricultural goods owned by Fulani cattle merchant were reportedly stopped from entering Jebba town, Kwara State, bordering Niger State; on their way to the South.

Moreover, it was gathered that the stoppage might be as result of the threats received by the national body of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), to stop its members from supplying and selling cattle to the South.

Salisu noted that the government is yet to meet the demands of the unions, therefore the strike is indefinite.

He added, the strike commenced on Thursday, and a task force has been set up to enforce the directive of the union, ” there would be no transportation of cattle and food stuffs to the south,” he said.

He also warned that anyone who violates the directives would be stopped in Niger State.

However, the Defense Headquarters said it had restored order along Jebba-Kaduna road where trucks conveying agricultural products from the North to the Southern parts of the country, were being prevented and turned back by some elements.

A statement issued by the spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, acting DHQ on Friday said, a “joint troop comprising the military and other security agency were deployed to clear Jebba-Kaduna road and have since restored normalcy in the general area”.
