Breaking News: Gov Nwifuru Declares Disputed Akaeze Land Buffer Zone to End Lingering Crisis
Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has taken decisive steps to address the protracted communal crisis between the people of Umobor-Akaeze and Ogwor-Ishiagu in Ivo Local Government Area. In a landmark move, Governor Nwifuru has declared the disputed land a buffer zone and directed all parties involved to stay away from the area. He warned that anyone found violating this directive would face the full weight of the law.
In a statement issued by Prof. Grace Umezurike, the Secretary to the State Government, Governor Nwifuru expressed deep concern over the recurring clashes and the loss of lives in the region. To ensure compliance and restore peace, he has instructed security agencies to strengthen their presence around the disputed area and maintain law and order.
As part of efforts to resolve the crisis, the Governor has invited 20 stakeholders from each of the two communities to a crucial meeting scheduled for Monday, December 16, 2024, at 12:00 PM in the Conference Room, Centenary City, Abakaliki. This meeting is expected to pave the way for dialogue and sustainable peace.
The declaration has been met with commendation from residents of the affected communities. Many believe the Governor’s intervention will finally bring an end to the hostilities that have claimed over 15 lives in the past month, including those of non-indigenes.
Mrs. Stella Ajah, a women leader, praised the Governor’s initiative, highlighting the adverse impact of the crisis on agriculture and commerce. “Most of our women, who are primarily farmers, can no longer go to their farms for fear of being attacked. Declaring the land a buffer zone is a commendable step, but the stakeholders must ensure the warlords are called to order,” she stated.
Mrs Ajah also urged the government to intensify security along the Ishiagu/Okigwe express road, which has become unsafe for motorists and commuters due to the unrest. “With Christmas around the corner, it is crucial to restore peace so travellers can return home safely for the festive season,” she added.
The Governor’s proactive measures have ignited hope among residents for a peaceful resolution to the dispute. All eyes now turn to the upcoming stakeholders’ meeting as the people of Umobor-Akaeze and Ogwor-Ishiagu look forward to a lasting solution.
