BREAK THE CHAINS OF BIAFRA’S SILENCE: FINLAND, CREATE YOUR LEGACY WITH SIMON EKPA’S FREEDOM!
Finland, under the leadership of President Alexander Stubb, has long been celebrated for its unwavering commitment to principles like Equality, Transparency, Human Rights, and Democracy. These are not just national values but are emblematic of Finland’s global identity. However, recent actions concerning the detention of Simon Ekpa, a prominent figure advocating for the rights of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), have cast a shadow over this image.
Simon Ekpa, recognized as the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), has been detained since November, 2024 following a petition by the Nigerian government on charges that are not only baseless but politically motivated. The accusation of terrorism seems particularly ironic when one considers Nigeria’s own problematic history with terrorism support, both domestically and abroad.
The question then arises: What image does President Stubb wish to project to the world regarding Finland’s core principles? The continued detention of Ekpa suggests a dissonance between Finland’s proclaimed values and its actions. Finland’s adherence to international law, including the United Nations Charter’s advocacy for self-determination, and the Helsinki Accords, which also affirm these rights, should guide its foreign policy and judicial decisions.
Simon Ekpa’s advocacy is not for violence but for the recognition and protection of his people from a very long-standing, systematic genocide in Nigeria’s South-East. His efforts are aligned with the very principles of self-determination that Finland has historically supported. The Finnish government’s decision to detain him, therefore, appears contradictory to its international human rights stance.
It is also crucial to recall Finland’s historical support for Biafra during the 1967-70 genocide. If Finland once stood in solidarity, why does it now seemingly support a narrative that could further endanger the Biafran struggle for survival?
Moreover, the unresolved case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, another Biafran leader, who was subjected to extraordinary rendition and remains detained despite a court ruling for his release, underscores Nigeria’s disregard for legal norms. This context should not be overlooked by Finnish authorities when considering Ekpa’s case.
President Stubb, and by extension, the Finnish Ministry of Justice, must reflect on the message they are sending. The world is watching, and the integrity of Finland’s commitment to human rights is at stake. If Finland truly respects the right to self-determination, Simon Ekpa should be freed without further delay. His detention serves no justice but only aids in silencing a voice against oppression.
Finland has an opportunity here to reaffirm its stance on human rights by ensuring that its actions match its words. The release of Simon Ekpa would not only rectify an injustice but also reinforce Finland’s image as a beacon of human rights and democratic values on the global stage.
The narrative Finland chooses to uphold through this case will resonate far beyond its borders, influencing perceptions of its commitment to justice, transparency, and the right of peoples to determine their own destiny. It’s time for Finland to act in accordance with its celebrated values and release Simon Ekpa, thereby standing firm against the backdrop of a tumultuous international human rights landscape.
