The Anambra state government is set to generate more Internally generated revenue from water transport as an alternative to other forms of transportation.
Anambra State has about 8 local government areas residing in the riverine areas and water transport will serve as means to connect them to the larger part of the state.
Reports gathered that the State Government is currently conducting feasibility study in the coastal areas of Ihiala, Ogbaru, Anambra-west, Anambra-East, Ayamelum, Awka-North and some others to determine the type of watercraft to establish in those areas for modern water transportation.
The State government is considering places like Otuocha, Nzam, Ogwuikpele and some others to build jetties to help people embark on their journeys.
He said that the water transportation project will bring good economic return to the state, especially when the rudimentary infrastructures are put in place.
The planned water transportation in Anambra State will open up riverine local governments for tourism and businesses thereby adding to the IGR of the state. It will also help decongest the roads as commuters would now find water as a viable means of transportation especially for people carrying loads.
