Anambra: Governorship Election extended – INEC

Obinwannem News Anambra: Governorship Election extended - INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission ‘INEC’ has extended the voting of the Anambra State governorship election from Saturday 6 to Sunday 7th of November.

However, the announcement was made by INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, in the person of Dr. Nwachukwu Orji.

Dr. Orji spoke to the newsmen and also went ahead to explain the reason behind the decision taken by INEC; He however, pointed out that the main reason for the extension was due to the malfunctioning of the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System ‘BIVAS’ machines used in casting votes which got faulty during the voting exercise.

The Commissioner stated that it has to be extended so that people who were unable to vote on Saturday 6 can now be able to come back on Sunday to cast their votes, as the machines suffered software hitches which led to mass failure of the BIVAS machines during the voting exercise today in Anambra State.

During his statement, he also disclosed that another reason for the extension is due to the late delivery of the voting materials alongside the drivers with ad-hoc staff whom were unable to arrive on time.

Therefore, the electoral commission also decided to shift the voting time from 02:30 pm to 04:00 pm; while their engineers work to rectify and fix the problem of the machines.
