Amnesty International Condemns Trial of 10 Activists, Including Pregnant Woman, as Court Orders Prison Remand

Abuja, Nigeria – In a move widely criticized by human rights groups, the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the prison remand of 10 activists, including a pregnant woman, Angel Innocent, until September 11 for the hearing of their bail applications.

The activists, who were arrested in connection with a recent hunger protest, were arraigned on six counts of treason, conspiracy, and inciting mutiny, among other charges. The prosecution alleges that they levied war against the state, intimidated President Bola Tinubu, and attacked and injured police officers and burned several buildings.

Amnesty International has condemned the trial, describing the charges as “trumped-up” and “sham.” The civil rights group argues that the activists were simply exercising their right to peaceful protest and should not face such severe charges.

Justice Emeka Nwite ordered the defendants to be remanded in Kuje and Suleja correctional centres, sparking concerns about the welfare of the pregnant woman and the other defendants.

The case has sparked outrage among human rights groups and activists, who see it as an attempt to silence dissenting voices in the country.
