Chelsea are set to retain Trevoh Chalobah after the 22-year-old convinced Thomas Tuchel he has a role to play in his team if given the opportunity.

The two-time Champions League winners are set to open contract talks with the defender who has shown class in his recent games for the London side.

With less than two years remaining on his deal, Chalobah was expected to go out on loan this season but his performances during the club’s pre-season games and in the opening game campaign against Crystal Palace have prompted Tuchel to rethink on letting him off.

The German tactician has shown interest in the young defender after an impressive Chelsea’s Super Cup victory against Villarreal last week and then scoring on his Premier League debut in Chelsea’s 3-0 win against Crystal Palace.

Lille, Valencia and some other EPL clubs had been interested in taking Chalobah on loan but Tuchel is likely to shelve such plans, considering his current performance, until January at least.
