• Calls for permanent cease fire

Top officials of the Afghanistan government welcomed the decision of the US president Biden adminstration of taking a bold step to review the February’s 2020 deal with Taliban insurgents.

The Islamic fundamentalist group (Taliban), ruled Afghanistan from 1996, until the US led invasion in 2001 – nearly two decades since – it has waged an insurgent against the US backed government and the afghanistan in Kabal. The war has continued to ravage the country almost two decades now. The US government intervened, deploying US soldiers to Afghanistan, with the aim of removing the Taliban from power, and ensuring safety in Afghanistan.

Jake Sullivan, the new US national security adviser, in a telephone conversation with Hamdullah Mohib his Afghan conterparts on Friday, informed him of the intentions of the Biden adminstration to review the peace agreement negotiated with the Taliban.

Sulivan made it clear that the United States intervention to review the February 2020 US-Taliban agreement included an assessment to attest whether the Taliban was leaving up to its commitment (to cut ties with the terrorist groups), to reduce violence in Afghanistan, and to engage in meaningful negotiation with Afghan government and other stake holders.

Mohib said they agreed to work towards a permanent cease fire and a just and durable peace in Afghanistan; capable of preserving the gains of the past two decades, protecting the rights of Afghans.

Mohib tweeted recently, of the promise Sullivan made to the government of Afghanistan and it’s security defence forces, that Partnership remains a priority to US national security.

Following the assisnation of two female judges last week at Kabal (capital and largest city of Afghanistan), the US warned the Taliban to cease attacks on civilian for peace to come to Afghanistan.

In a tweet by the US charged affairs Ross Wilson stated “the Taliban should understand that such actions for which it bears
responsibility outrage the world, and must cease if peace is to come to Afghanistan”.

The US had signed a peace deal during Trump’s tenure in 2020. The Islamist group demanded the withdrawal of American troop from Afghanistan – the agreement laid out a 14month period for the withdrawal of “all military force of the United States, its allies and coalition partners, including all non-diplomatic civilians, private security contractors, trainers, advisors and supporting service personel”

However, weeks ahead of the 2020 election, Trump ordered all US soldiers stationed in Afghanistan to return home for Christmas, which was welcomed by Afghanistan. But, when president Biden took office,2500 troops were still stationed in Afghanistan.

Following the development, the Taliban agreed not to allow any form of security operatives in Afghanistan to give security to the people, in addition, they agreed to engage the Afghanistan government in peace talks, aimed at ending the war.

The intra-Afghan talks have been married with a surge of violence, coupled with a recent spate of high profile killings of officials.

The review comes amid the stalled intra-Afghan talks in the Qatari capital, Doha, which is aimed at ending two decades conflict in Afghanistan.
