In a recent disclosure, former Nigerian Head of State General Yakubu Gowon (rtd) provided new light on the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970), claiming that Britain played a big role in pressuring him to fight. Gowon argued that the British administration perceived the Igbo people’s growing scientific and economic might as a danger to their power in Nigeria.

According to Gowon, Igbo land had achieved amazing progress in technology and infrastructure, particularly with the building of what he dubbed “Quantum City.” He said that without foreign help, the Igbos might have overrun Nigeria in a month.

The Nigerian Civil War, commonly known as the Biafran War, began when the eastern region, dominated by the Igbo ethnic group, declared independence as the Republic of Biafran. The conflict resulted in tremendous casualties, economic damage, and a humanitarian crisis, with millions of Biafrans starving due to the Nigerian government’s blockade.

Gowon’s remarks revive debate over the role of foreign powers in African crises, as well as the Igbo people’s latent potential. The former leader’s declaration has elicited varied emotions, with some viewing it as an admission of past faults, while others believe it emphasizes the need for greater unity and reconciliation in Nigeria.

His statements raise issues about how different Nigeria’s history would have been if the conflict had turned out differently, as well as whether the country has completely capitalized on the Igbo people’s technological prowess in national progress.
