Obinwannem News Aba traders lament over shops demolition, solicit govt's intervention

Traders at the Ngwa Market, Abia State, condemn the cruel actions of a construction company, demolishing parts of the market, while urging the state lawmakers, to intervene, to avoid further destruction.

One of the leaders, who narrated the ordeal encountered by the traders, called, Ngene, said sometime ago, traders in the market were given a notice that a construction firm, Messrs Peacock Regeneration Limited, would demolish and rebuild stalls in the Market.

Ngene explained there were no formal discussions held between officials of the firm, and the traders, but instead a company fortnight ago, told traders that the demolition of the stalls would convene by the end of May.

However, the traders sought help from the House of Assembly; unfortunately, officials of the company failed to show up at the Assembly premises, which made members of the House to reschedule, their meeting for June 2, while admonishing the company to start demolition, until after the meeting.

Ngene stated that instead of waiting for the outcome of the meeting as directed by the House, the company surprisingly, on Sunday, when people had gone to church, went on and demolished parts of the Markets.

The traders lamented, that they used their money to rebuild the market, and had an understanding with the authorities of Aba South Council, that the traders would recoup their money through stallage fee payments.

He further disclosed, that traders are yet to recoup their money before the current development.

The traders, however, noted that the Market, they were asked to relocate to, was not big enough to accommodate a quarter of the affected traders, and had serious security challenges.

The traders are calling on the state House of Assembly, to immediately intervene to prevent further damage and hardship.
